60 years: China-made fabrics break the bottleneck into the innovative fast lane

The textile industry in China has undergone remarkable transformation since the early days of liberation. Initially dominated by monochrome blue, gray, and black garments, it evolved to incorporate various fabrics like cotton, wool, and silk. By the mid-1990s, industry leaders recognized the potential of fabric as a pivotal factor in elevating the sector's status. This shift marked the beginning of China's journey towards global prominence in the textile domain. The establishment of the China International Fabrics Expo and the promotion of domestic fabric engineering have played crucial roles in expanding the industry's reach. Over the years, the focus has consistently been on aligning fabric innovations with fashion trends, breaking through traditional barriers, and advocating for advancements in domestic fabric quality. The industry's trajectory reflects a commitment to continuous innovation—a necessity for progress. In the post-founding era of New China, blue, gray, and black were staples in everyday attire. By the 1970s, fabrics began showing more variety, and with the advent of改革开放(reform and opening-up), street fashion gained momentum. Today, when selecting clothing, people consider not just style and color but also the fabric’s material, technology, and fashionability. Innovation remains the driving force behind the industry's advancement. In the past decade, fabric innovation has made significant strides. A landmark event occurred in 1993 when a seminar introduced the idea of synchronizing fashion trends between apparel and fabrics, establishing a new fabric sample market. This approach emphasized a design-to-consumption model, receiving support from industry associations. In 1996, the "China Spring/Summer 1997 Fashion Conference" brought together renowned brands such as Hangzhou Kaidi Silk Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Sunshine Group to explore seasonal fashion trends. This highlighted the increasing importance of understanding market dynamics beyond the planned economy framework. In 1998, the "Well Bamboo" brand seminar underscored the need for diversity and creativity in fabrics. Wu Wenying, former chairman of the China Textile Association, emphasized the synergy between clothing and fabrics. By 1999, fabric innovation became a focal point at the "China International Textile & Apparel Fair," where the State Textile Industry Bureau set ambitious goals to boost self-sufficiency rates and reduce imports. The "Xiantao Cup" fabric design seminar echoed this vision, emphasizing originality over mere imitation. The textile industry's emphasis on fabric has grown exponentially. From practicality to fashion-forward designs, fabric innovation now drives product development. The "Spring and Summer 2012 Textile Fabric Trends" showcased the evolving landscape of China's textile sector. As the industry evolves, fabric has become a cornerstone for industrial upgrades, with practicality, fashion, and originality defining industry goals. From 1995 to today, the China International Textile & Apparel Fair has celebrated 15 years of growth, reflecting the rapid progress of China's textile sector. The domestic fabric industry has transitioned from cost-focused production to product-centric innovation, emerging as a global leader. Over the last decade, the promotion of "popular fabrics" has guided quarterly trends, addressing consumer needs while adapting to modern lifestyles. The financial crisis of 2008 spurred a shift toward economical yet stylish fabrics, emphasizing environmental adaptability and originality. Domestic fabric enterprises have flourished, akin to saplings growing into towering trees. For this growth to continue, the industry must sustain its passion for innovation, propelling Chinese fabrics to the forefront of international fashion. (Zhang Zhenxiao)
