asmita’s geneva blouse

Asmita never fails to impress when it comes to creating stunning garments using Liesl + Co. patterns, and her take on the Geneva V-Neck Blouse is no different. From the moment I laid eyes on this pattern, I knew it was something I absolutely had to sew for myself. The open V-neck design paired with the option for both short and long sleeves seemed ideal for our sweltering summer months. The first version I made was crafted from a soft pink cotton fabric with bell sleeves. While I don't typically gravitate towards bold statement sleeves, these had just the right amount of flair to make them feel elegant rather than over-the-top. To break up all the pink, I added a touch of delicate embroidery to the cuffs and hemline. For my second attempt, I selected a beautiful jamdani fabric. This lightweight cotton weave, originating from eastern India and parts of Bangladesh, features intricate traditional motifs. Working with such a delicate material required extra care during construction—hand stitching was occasionally necessary to ensure the fabric didn’t fray or tear. Sewing this blouse wasn’t overly complex, but it introduced me to several new techniques, like perfectly centering the back pleats. This seemingly minor detail makes a big difference in the final fit and finish. For both versions, I chose to omit the buttonholes since the slightly raised neckline allowed the blouse to slip on effortlessly. With such a refined appearance, even as a beginner sewer, completing this project gave me immense satisfaction. In terms of fitting adjustments, my measurements placed me between sizes 2 and 4 based on my high bust and bust measurements. Opting for size 4 with an A/B cup adjustment worked well for me after testing with a muslin. Here’s what I ended up tweaking: - A half-inch forward shoulder adjustment. - Narrowed the back pleat by about ⅛ to ¼ inch. - Raised the neckline by three-quarters of an inch. - Reduced the bodice seam allowance slightly below the lengthen/shorten line to add some breathing room. - Shortened the overall length by 2¾ inches to accommodate wearing it either tucked or untucked (I’m 5'4" tall). Both versions turned out beautifully, each offering their own unique charm. The pink blouse feels playful yet sophisticated, while the jamdani version exudes timeless elegance. Each piece serves as a testament to Liesl + Co.'s thoughtful design and my growing confidence in sewing. I couldn’t be happier with how these tops turned out—they’re versatile wardrobe staples that I know I’ll reach for again and again throughout the warmer seasons ahead.
