Recently, according to the Economic Research Institute of the French Institute of Fashion, there has been a noticeable improvement in the consumption trends within the French textile sector. In August, the value of textile sales rose by 8.2%, marking a positive shift after years of decline. While this figure is still below the levels recorded in the same period in 2007, it represents a significant recovery compared to 2008, which saw a drop of 9.8%, and 2009, with a fall of 13.3%.
The growth was not uniform across all retail channels. Large department stores experienced a strong increase of 20.1% in textile sales, likely driven by both domestic demand and increased tourist spending. Volkswagen stores reported a 13.8% rise, while specialty stores saw a more modest 5.8% growth. Individual retailers also performed well, with an 8.9% increase, and large retail chains grew by 7.7%. However, hypermarkets had a much slower growth rate at just 2.9%, indicating that they are struggling to keep up with the current market dynamics.
Looking at specific product categories, children's clothing remained highly popular, with a 13% increase from July, breaking a previous negative trend. Women's fashion saw a strong 19% rise, while men's fashion grew by 10.5%. On the other hand, certain segments like men's underwear only managed a meager 0.4% increase, and women's underwear actually declined by 0.7%. These figures suggest that some areas of the market are still facing challenges, despite the overall positive momentum in the textile industry.
