Apparel exporters increase export prices Saudi garment prices will rise 50%

According to a Saudi communique released on December 2, 2010, clothing prices in the Kingdom are expected to rise by as much as 50% due to increasing export costs from garment-producing countries and stricter customs regulations.

Reports indicate that clothing prices have already gone up by approximately 20%, with some retailers experiencing even higher increases. This is partly due to the fact that Saudi authorities have been testing imported clothing for up to a month, which has led to increased storage and inspection costs for importers. These additional expenses are being passed on to consumers, driving up retail prices.

Local importers have been in ongoing discussions with overseas suppliers about the rising cost of garments, but no clear resolution has been reached so far. If the price hike continues, many low-income consumers may find it increasingly difficult to afford basic clothing.

The overall increase in clothing prices is especially noticeable for items imported from China, where the value of the Chinese yuan has risen significantly. Since the Saudi riyal is pegged to the U.S. dollar, this currency fluctuation has had a direct impact on import costs. In fact, around 90% of the clothing sold in Saudi Arabia comes from China.

However, the exchange rate is not the only factor at play. China’s growing infrastructure projects and rising labor costs have also contributed to higher production expenses for garment manufacturers. These increased costs are ultimately passed down to importers, who are now looking for alternative sourcing options. Some have already started shifting their supply chains to Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.

In addition, Saudi Arabia introduced a new policy just 15 days ago, requiring all imported clothing, fabrics, and textiles to undergo mandatory inspections by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This added regulatory burden is likely to further complicate the supply chain and contribute to continued price increases.

As the situation evolves, both importers and consumers are bracing for more challenges ahead. With rising costs and stricter regulations, the clothing market in Saudi Arabia is facing a period of uncertainty and adjustment.
