Zimbabwe cuts import tax on clothing

Editor's note: The government will soon begin to discuss this issue with stakeholders and revise tariffs. It will soon formally announce that the government of Zimbabwe has decided to cut the tariffs on imported clothing and textiles and financially subsidize Dye. Bitty said.

According to the 2012 national budget statement submitted at the end of last year, the tariffs on textiles and apparel items have recently increased from (40%+1 US$)/kg to (40%+3 US$)/kg.

Bitty said that stakeholders in the apparel and textile industries have raised concerns about some of the tariff measures that the government has taken effect from January 1, 2012, on the 1st of this year.

Bitty added that the government will soon begin discussing this issue with stakeholders and amend tariffs, which will be formally announced soon.

The new measures to reduce imports implemented this year have helped domestic production and provided a fair competition environment for the country’s textile industry. However, the local production department was able to meet domestic demand, Beatty said.

In 2011, Zimbabwe’s total exports reached US$3.67 billion, which is lower than the US$6.2 billion imported. This high dependence on imports cannot be sustained in the long term, so measures need to be taken to support the growth of domestic production.
