friday picks

Hello, friends! It was such a joy to finally meet many of you at my fitness workshop in Nashville last weekend. As always, I look forward to connecting with all of you in person. Since I had a lot of time to kill during flights and layovers on my way home, I’ve put together some fantastic weekend reads for you. I’ll keep this post brief so I can dive into the backlog of work waiting for me. If you missed it, Shelley’s tutorial for the V-neck Metro Tee (or School Bus Tee) was definitely a standout—her instructions were incredibly clear! Don’t forget about the Butterfly Skirt sew-along, which wraps up today, along with the giveaway and contest that ends next week. I hope you’ll participate! Next week, we’ll be back with Meredith’s favorite pattern, which works for both boys and girls, plus a super cute leggings tutorial. In the meantime, what are your sewing plans for the weekend? I’m considering making a gingham Everyday Skirt, and my daughter S needs a longer chambray Lazy Days Skirt. She’s been dying to use some ribbon for the hem, so maybe it’ll be a mother-daughter sewing session! --- **Pinterest Picks** Looking for cute sandals for the kids this summer? These are adorable, and there are tons of other styles available on the same site. (I wish they came in S’s size!) [Image description: A pair of colorful children's sandals] At first glance, I thought these jar vases were painted, but they’re actually even more creative. The colored part is made from a deflated balloon! [Image description: A collection of glass jars with colorful balloon interiors] This DIY ice cream sandwich postcard brings back memories of our Keep Your Cool Smartphone Case sewing pattern. It’s just so charming! [Image description: A photo of a handmade ice cream sandwich postcard] This summer quilt is absolutely stunning. It’s perfect for those warm evenings ahead. [Image description: A vibrant quilt with a summery color palette] Speaking of summer, this hairstyle caught my eye while I was on a flight recently. It’s simple yet stylish! [Image description: A photo of a braided hairstyle] --- **Weekend Reading Links** 1. I recently started using a Fitbit to track my daily steps (no wonder comfortable shoes are so important to me!), distance walked (at least five miles a day), and sleep duration (which isn’t nearly enough). This article about the importance of sleep for brain detoxification really resonated with me. Did you know that poor sleep habits can lead to even worse sleep? 2. If you’re a book lover, you might already know that reading can be therapeutic. But did you know there’s such a thing as a bibliotherapist? My sister Christy, a librarian and avid reader, would probably excel at this role. 3. For all the moms out there, here’s another reason to remind your kids to wash their hands. Again. 4. 2015 has been a year of growth for me—learning more about sewing, patternmaking (always room for improvement!), playing the violin, and now taking up Spanish. This article about mastering new skills makes perfect sense. What new hobby or skill are you working on? 5. Have you seen John Oliver’s take on fast fashion? His humor makes it both entertaining and enlightening. Wishing you a fantastic weekend, everyone! --- P.S. For those interested in sustainable fashion, check out this insightful piece on ethical clothing brands. It’s inspiring to see people pushing for change in the industry. Have fun, stay safe, and happy sewing!
