Transfer printing is a large-scale industrial fabric printing technique that first emerged in the late 1960s. Unlike traditional direct printing, where ink is applied directly to the fabric, transfer printing involves printing the design onto an intermediate material—such as paper or plastic film—and then transferring it to the final substrate. This method offers several advantages over conventional printing technologies: 1. Two popular thermal transfer methods are dye sublimation and hot wax transfer. These techniques use a ribbon as the transfer medium to apply digital images onto fabrics. Both hot wax and dye sublimation printers operate similarly. They use ribbons composed of four color panels—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK)—printed one at a time. The main difference lies in the materials used: dye sublimation uses transparent dyes that bond with the fabric, while hot wax relies on wax-based pigments, which tend to have lower color fastness. Ongoing research is needed to improve the durability of hot wax transfers. Today, transfer printing plays a key role in the textile industry. Digital transfer technology allows for flexible image acquisition through cameras, scanners, or even online sources. Digitizing boards convert analog signals into digital formats, enabling easy editing and storage. With the rise of online publishing, images can be downloaded directly from the internet, enhancing the speed and accessibility of the printing process. Online publishing features include digitalization, network distribution, and electronic transactions, all of which are transforming how we create, share, and consume printed materials. As a result, digital transfer printing meets the growing demand for small batches, quick turnaround, and customizable designs.
