This poetic line captures the essence of Nandu Town, a place in Suixi City that has long been known as the hometown of bamboo. Nestled among rolling hills and riverbanks, this town is surrounded by an abundance of bamboo, which has shaped not only its landscape but also its culture and economy.
Nandu Town has a rich tradition of bamboo craftsmanship that dates back centuries. Local farmers have long cultivated various types of bamboo on hillsides, riverbanks, and around their homes, creating a thriving industry. Today, the town boasts over 10,000 mu of bamboo plantations, producing more than 600,000 tons of raw materials annually. The value of these materials reaches over 20 million yuan each year, making bamboo a major source of income for many families.
The art of bamboo weaving has been part of daily life in Nandu for generations. Farmers used to craft everyday items like chairs, baskets, cages, and rain caps from locally grown bamboo. However, the potential of this craft was not fully realized until the 1970s, when visionary individuals began to explore new opportunities.
One such figure was Liang Hong, a farmer from Yiwu Village. With ambition and a clear vision, he partnered with others to establish the Nandu Bamboo Art Factory. Starting with just 10 yuan each, they began by selling simple products like brooms and baskets through local supply cooperatives. Over time, they learned to bypass intermediaries, directly contacting foreign trade bureaus and securing large orders. One notable deal involved a single order for 1 million brooms, though they managed to complete only 100,000 due to material shortages. Learning from this, they improved their production and quality control, eventually producing over 3 million brooms in the following year.
This success marked a turning point. The industry evolved from basic crafts to more refined and diverse products, including bamboo curtains, boxes, and even custom-made items. As demand grew, especially from overseas markets in Southeast Asia and Europe, Nandu's bamboo weaving industry began to expand rapidly.
By the early 1980s, the industry had become a major economic force in the town. More than 40% of households were involved in bamboo weaving, and nearly 20 enterprises operated in the area. However, the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s brought challenges, causing a temporary decline.
But with growing global awareness of eco-friendly and sustainable products, the demand for high-quality bamboo crafts surged again. Recognizing this opportunity, the local government took action, establishing specialized zones and promoting the development of a full-scale bamboo weaving industry. New areas like "Zhumang Street," "Zhuzhi Village," and "Zhumang Village" emerged, transforming Nandu into a true "Bamboo Weaving Town."
In the early 2000s, the industry experienced a revival. Companies like Zhuxi South Craft Factory and Huaqiang Craft Factory led the way, adopting a "corporate + base + farmer" model. Farmers produced goods according to company specifications, ensuring consistent quality and efficient distribution. This system helped streamline production, packaging, and export, creating a seamless supply chain.
Yixin Village became a key hub for this industry. With over 5,000 residents involved and more than 1,800 people engaged in bamboo weaving, it became a model of rural development. The village exported a wide range of products, including bamboo handles, baskets, and rattan crafts, generating over 11 million yuan in annual output and 1.6 million USD in foreign exchange earnings.
As Yixin thrived, other villages followed suit. Today, 25 villages across Nandu Town are involved in the industry, with nearly 20,000 farmers participating. The influence of this craft has spread beyond the town, reaching neighboring areas in Guangdong and beyond. Nandu’s bamboo weaving industry has truly come of age, blending tradition with modern innovation to create a bright future for its people.
