In April 2011, Indian carpet exports reached US$65.53 million

In April 2011, Indian carpet exports rose by 19% to $65.53 million, due to a sharp increase in demand from Western markets.

In April last year, India’s carpet exports reached 47.8 million U.S. dollars, according to the latest data released by the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC).

"The current demand has risen sharply. The United States and Europe have achieved better results," said Glarag, chairman of the Indian Rug Export Promotion Association.

Glarag also mentioned that the performance of the new market also performed better because of the increase in demand from the Middle East and Latin America.

India’s major carpet export projects have seen an increase in April. This includes handmade wool rugs, blankets, rough blankets, and combed carpets. In fact, cotton carpets also showed an increase in exports in April.

Other sectors, including exports of hand-tufted tufted carpets, handmade silk carpets, and hand-made fiber carpets, have also experienced rapid growth compared with the same period last year.

The Indian Rug Export Promotion Association said that in 2010-11 fiscal year, the export of rugs rose by 24% to reach US$653 million, and the export volume in 2009-10 was US$525 million. In the current fiscal year, the goal of the Indian Carpet Export Promotion Association is to export 800 million U.S. dollars worth of carpets.
