What is plagioclase?

Plagioclase

The plagioclase belongs to the general name of the feldspar mineral of the NaAlSi3O8(Ab)-CaAl2Si2O8(An) genus series. It is divided into six mineral species: albite (An0-10Ab100-90) and aragonite (An10- 30Ab90-70), medium feldspar (An30-50Ab70-50), labradorite (An50-70Ab50-30), feldspar (An70-90Ab30-10) and anorthite (An90-100Ab10-0). In petrology, the former two are collectively referred to as acidic plagioclase, and the latter three are collectively referred to as basic plagioclase.

The crystal belongs to the triclinic framework of silicate minerals. The crystal form is columnar, thick plate-like, often granular or massive; the color is mostly grayish white, sometimes the micro-band light brown, light blue and light red; hardness 6- 6.5; relative density 2.61-2.76; glass luster; two groups of cleavage. Fine and parallel twin crystal grains are visible on the crystal face or cleavage surface. White to grayish white, some are light blue or light green, glass luster, translucent. The two groups of cleavage (a complete set, a set of medium) intersected at 86 ° 24', hence the name plagioclase. Mohs hardness 6-6.5, specific gravity 2.6-2.76.

The plagioclase is widely distributed in magmatic rocks, metamorphic rocks and sedimentary clastic rocks. The plagioclase is the main raw material for the ceramic industry and the glass industry. The beautiful color can be used as a gemstone material, such as daylight stone.
